Two of my dearest friends from high school: Tam, Pham, and their adorable minions.
Today, they made a five hour drive from their home to visit me after learning that I was ill. Tam told me the other night that he had something important to tell me, but he wanted to do it in person.
In an unexpected and heartfelt moment, he turned and said to me:
“Nguyen, I know you’ve been working hard to make the best of your situation… to make a positive impact before you go… but I want you to know that you’ve already made a huge impact in my personal life.
In high school, it was you who gave me the courage to approach Pham and talk to her, which led to our twenty plus years together and our beautiful family today.”
After he reminded me, I did remember that day…
We were all in Journalism class together, Tam was one of my best friends, and I knew he had a huge crush on Pham. What I couldn’t figure out was why on earth he wouldn’t talk to the girl? Did she have intolerable body odor?… a scary dad?… rabies??
So… I took it upon myself to find out. I went and talked to Pham. I had nothing to lose.
After confirming that she smelled fantastic, her family was normal, and she wasn’t frothing at the mouth from rabies, I waved Tam over and broke the ice between the two of them.
Honestly, from that point on, it was all Tam. It was his genuine love and devotion to this beautiful girl that built the incredible relationship that they still have today. I take no credit for that achievement.
I guess it goes to show that even the smallest gestures of kindness can make the biggest of impact in another person’s life. You just never know.
After today, I might just start wearing a pin on my shirt with my new title: The Love Doctor.
